The Zoology Department SBKWU, Quetta was established in 2004. The Department is providing teaching and research in various Zoology disciplines such as Entomology, Physiology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Developmental biology, Animal Behavior, Parasitology, Human Genetics, wildlife, and Fisheries. It is one of the most crowded and productive department of SBKWU, Quetta in terms of number of students, published research papers, articles, and books. The Department has proved its existence by curricular and co-curricular activities; therefore, the Zoology Department is among the best and leading Departments of SBKWU, Quetta.
More than three hundred research papers have been published by the faculty members in National and International research journals. About 400 students are enrolled each year at various levels in the department including various specializations. Several are being enrolled each year in M.Phil and Ph.D programs.
The Department is well-equipped with labs that facilitate students of all levels especially the MPhil and Ph.D in research and learning activities.
Vision
The vision of the Zoology Department is to advance scientific knowledge and innovation in the fields of Genetics, Microbiology, Fisheries, Entomology, Molecular biology, Ecology, Marine biology and Physiology through impactful education, cutting-edge research, and community engagement. Through specialized training and outreach, we aspire to equip future scientists and professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to address complex biological challenges, support sustainable practices, and contribute to the scientific community at regional, national, and global levels.
Mission
The mission of the Zoology department is to foster a deep understanding of animal biology, behavior, and ecology through rigorous academic programs, innovative research, and community engagement. The department is dedicated to providing students with the knowledge, skills, and ethical framework necessary to become future leaders in the field of zoology, conservation science, and environmental sustainability.
Objective/Goals
  • Quality Education: To deliver a comprehensive curriculum that covers all major aspects of zoology, from molecular biology to ecosystem dynamics, ensuring that students are well-prepared for professional success in academia, research, and industry.
  • Innovative Research: To support and promote cutting-edge research in various branches of zoology, including but not limited to animal physiology, behavior, genetics, ecology, and evolutionary biology, with an emphasis on applied research for environmental and conservation challenges.
  • Conservation Focus: To engage in research and outreach activities that directly contribute to the conservation of wildlife, ecosystems, and natural resources, working in collaboration with national and international conservation bodies.
  • Field Experience and Practical Skills: To provide students with extensive fieldwork and laboratory experience, enhancing their practical knowledge and technical skills, including modern research methodologies, data analysis, and field sampling techniques.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: To foster interdisciplinary collaboration with other departments, research institutions, and environmental organizations, enabling a broader understanding of ecological and environmental issues
  • Global Impact: To produce graduates who are not only academically proficient but also socially responsible and equipped to address global environmental challenges, including climate change, habitat loss, and biodiversity decline.
  • Professional Development: To offer opportunities for students and faculty to engage in professional development activities such as internships, conferences, workshops, and continuing education programs that will enhance their careers and contribute to the wider scientific community.
Purpose
The Zoology department serves as an academic hub dedicated to the exploration and understanding of the diverse animal kingdom and its interactions with the environment. The department aims to:
  • Provide a platform for in-depth academic learning that encourages critical thinking and scientific inquiry.
  • Promote a deeper appreciation of animal biology through research, outreach, and education.
  • Equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address pressing global environmental issues such as climate change, species extinction, and ecosystem degradation.
  • Contribute to the scientific community by producing high-quality research that advances knowledge in zoology and informs conservation practices.
  • Provide students with a comprehensive understanding by offering some foundation courses in our curriculum like animal diversity, animal form and functions, evolution, principles of systematics, cell biology, genetics, physiology and ecology.
